VGC 2025 Pokémon Melbourne Regional Championships — Top Teams and Results

Pokemon Regionals.png
The 2025 Melbourne Regional Championships were won by Masayoshi Kuroo, cleverly using a unique combination of Koraidon and Calyrex Shadow Rider.

This event was the first in the Oceania region to use the Regulation Set I ruleset, allowing the use of Paradox Pokemon, Legendary Pokemon, along with a choice of two Restricted Special Pokemon per team. This format runs from now until the end of August 2025, encompassing the 2025 Pokémon World Championships, held in Anaheim, California on the 15th-17th of August.

The following list shows the Top 8 players, their previous titles, the teams they used, as well as the prizes they earned. This includes Championship Points (CP), cash prizes in USD, and any invites to the World Championships.

Top Pokemon

Incineroar's usage jumps from 31.2% in the 2025 Milwaukee Regionals to a whopping 55.3% in Melbourne. The only other Pokémon to get near this impressive feat is Rillaboom, seeing an incredible increase of 19.2% between Day 1 and Day 2, partially due to its ability to reset the Electric Terrain that Miraidon, the most popular Restricted Pokémon and one of the most popular Pokémon overall, sets with its signature ability Hadron Engine. Rillaboom is also part of a popular team composition featuring itself, Amoonguss, Incineroar, and most commonly Ogerpon's Rock-type Cornerstone form. All of these Pokémon saw a noticeable day-to-day increase in usage too. The team is commonly headed by Calyrex Shadow Rider and Terapagos, but some trainers in Melbourne have opted to switch the latter out for Zamazenta.

The greatest decreases in usage come from Ursaluna and Farigiraf, dropping 15.9% and 16.8% respectively. With the recent 2025 Milwaukee Regionals and Grand Challenge IV both being won by the same team that features Ursaluna as a part of a powerful Trick Room core, it's likely that most players have had a lot of practice against it. If most players know how to work around a significant aspect of a team, it's less likely to perform well.

Top Restricted Pokemon

As described above, Calyrex Shadow Rider, Terapagos, and Zamazenta all feature in a popular team composition that's gained a lot of traction recently, explaining their massive increases in usage. Despite dominating early events in Regulation Set I, Miraidon and Lunala both see a decrease in usage, with the latter dropping a whopping 19.1% in usage.
