Two new Lapras-themed playgrounds to be opened in Miyagi Prefecture in Japan

Laplace playground designThe Pokémon Company announced via X (formerly Twitter) that two new Pokémon-themed playgrounds will be built in existing parks in Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. An announcement ceremony was held today at the Miyagi Prefectural Office to reveal the design of the new “Laplace” parks.

The new play areas are designed with Water-type theming, and will feature a large central Lapras-shaped play structure. These playgrounds are donations from The Pokémon Company to the prefecture as part of the Pokémon Local Acts program, which is designed to encourage tourism to various areas of Japan through merchandise, events, and donations like this one.

Lapras has been designated the official Ambassador to Miyagi Prefecture by Pokémon Local Acts since 2019, since the Transport Pokémon “would have loved to boost Miyagi’s tourism by doing what it enjoys—ferrying people across oceans.” The new playgrounds are also planned to include Carvanha, Wailmer, and Wiglett elements.

The first Lapras playground will open in Moririn Kasenuma Park in the town of Rifu in October of this year. The other will be located in Kaigan Park in the prefecture’s capital city of Sendai, and is scheduled to open in Spring 2026.
